Mastering the Underrated Skill - Writing

Writing skills are perhaps the most underrated skills of our times. Skilled writers are in demand more than ever. Such is the case that an entire new job profile (content writing) dedicated to writing has come to exist today.

But this skill is not only required for content writing. It is required by everyone looking to make it big in corporations since it is needed to put across your thoughts to clients, investors, senior management, colleagues and of course needed for you to make a prolific social media profile.

Writing is a basic conventional aspect of education that every student is taught right at the beginning of their school. However there’s a huge gap between the demand and supply of quality writers. This article thus mentions a few tricks that will help you provide that certain edge to your writing. It will help you to turn your conventional writeup into a skilled content:

  • Finalise a subject.

Pinning down on a topic is perhaps one of the first steps in writing a piece. If you are a newbie to the art, it's advisable that you kickstart with a subject based on an interest area. This will give you more ease and help your flair bloom. You will also find a personal interest in what you write in such a case. Try to keep your topic specific and objective. Narrowing down on a particular subject is very important. Covering a vast issue in a single article can not only make your article long and boring but also make you more confused.

  • Research, Take a stand and Evolve a Perspective

Prior to writing a piece, three aspects shape your approach to the venture-

Research - It is based on your research that you take a stand on the subject and develop a perspective on the issue at hand. Your research also determines how well informed your piece sounds alongside educating your audience.

Your Stand - Taking a stand on an issue is also very important. It determines a systematic thought based approach to your topic.

Your Perspective - gives your work a personal touch. It also makes your audience feel itself as a part of your writing process.

These three are quite interlinked. A thorough understanding of each of these aspects makes it easier for you to go to the next step.

  • Planning

A planned approach to any task in life works wonders for it. The case is no different for writing either. Planning is the third and most essential step to a wholesome piece. The usual structure goes like - Introduction, Body, Conclusion. This is something that perhaps all of us know as the basic structure of an essay. But what goes in each part? Well, the introduction should ideally introduce the subject and premise for your essay. It is basically the foundation pillar on which the construction of your essay takes shape. The topic, principal subject and your stand on the subject is usually laid out in the introduction. The introduction is followed by the body. Through the body paragraphs, the writer puts forward his arguments justifying his stand on the subject. The final stage is the conclusion wherein the writer reiterates his stand initially pronounced in the introduction. Through the arguments explained in the body, the writer justifies his stand in the conclusion and thus resolves the subject.

  • Writing Style

Whenever you take to writing, always imagine yourself in your readers’ shoes. This will help you increase the appeal of your piece while making it more comprehensible. After completing your research, you might know about several things which your audience might have no knowledge of. In such a case your piece should be empowering and knowledgeable. Thus everytime you talk of a technical term related to your subject try including a line explaining its meaning.

Another trick that you can use to glue your readers is making the piece interactive and at times (if possible) quirky. This will add small aspects of humor to your write up and also make your readers interested enough to go on.

A third trick by which you can make things interactive is the use of rhetorical questions. This will not only force your readers to think but also make them more immersed in what you have to say.

  • Simple, Lucid language

One of the most handy tricks to keep in mind for a great write-up is the use of simple, lucid language. An essay written for the masses is ideally not the best place for application of your vocabulary. Avoid use of complex words to increase comprehensibility. Simple words and short sentences keep your readers engaged and attentive. In addition to this, try to also keep in mind that your sentences are not repetitive in nature or meaning.

  • Use of Literary Devices

Literary devices are perhaps the most underrated and underused tools of english language. Given this fact the use of devices like metaphors, similes, imageries etc. can make your style of writing unique. This might also help you lure your audience. These aspects add to the literary aesthetics of your composition. One more trick that can be used by avid readers who take to writing is emulating the style of your favorite author. From Charles Dickens to Rudyard Kipling, every author does have a unique style which has endeared them to their readers and especially to you. Sometimes emulating these styles may fetch you great results. To top it off, you can always improvise!

  • Referencing Styles

Facts are an integral part of any essay. Be it persuasive essays or research papers, facts are like oxygen to human beings. They breathe your assertions to life. It is extremely difficult to prove your stance on a matter without explaining via facts. However what offers facts and your arguments credibility is the source of these facts. It is of prime importance to mention the source of your facts, to gain and persuade your audience to agree with you. There are different ways of referencing the sources to your facts. Some of these include the Harvard referencing style, the APA referencing style etc. These styles also give your article a professional look.

  • Use of Graphics

Nobody likes to read articles filled with words. It becomes monotonous, boring and often leads to a headache. That's where the role of images, visuals, creatives, cartoons etc. comes in. Apart from spacing out your content, visuals like images, pie charts and tables can be efficiently used to supplement or sometimes even summaries your argument. They make the article soothing to the eye and keep your reader on his/her toes throughout the piece.

  • Importance of Editing and Review

Every write up should have a rough draft first before going in for a final draft or copy. Once the rough draft is completed, the article should be thoroughly reviewed and edited. The purpose of this is to make it as concise and as grammatically correct as possible. You may write the best and the most convincing of essays but a single grammatical error can strike a huge blow to the impression of your audience. This stage is the most taxing and decisive of the lot. One small miss can cost a lot. The rough draft after edit and corrections becomes the final draft. It's best to get your final draft read by a third person to get a neutral objective view on your composition’s comprehensibility and quality. If that's not possible, give it a read yourself with a fresh mind before publishing it.

Good writing skills are not only an asset to succeed but also a means to express. It is through writing that global leaders believe in expressing their thoughts and communicating their ideas. Jeff Bezos, for instance, insists his senior executives write long narrative memos instead of snoozing through bullet points. Little to wonder, the demand for skilled and trained writers for a variety of industries is ever growing. Simple as it may sound, getting our thoughts together in a penned down composition is a cumbersome task. Through this blog, that's exactly what we seek to make easy. If writing is your knowledge, content writing is your skill. Churning out skills from conventional education is what we at Skillenable strive for.

So cheers to a happy writing session!
